Tombs of Osman Gazi
Overview
Osman Gazi is known as the founder of the Ottoman Empire and lived between 1258-1324. After the conquest of Bursa, he was buried in the tomb called "Gümüşlü Kumbet", which was built on the chapel of the Byzantine Monastery called Sainte Elie. The tomb, which was completely destroyed due to the fire of 1801 and the earthquake of 1855, was restored by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1863, remaining faithful to its old structure. The mother-of-pearl inlaid wooden sarcophagus belonging to Osman Gazi in the tomb is surrounded by mother-of-pearl inlaid railings. The silver and silver embroidered cover on velvet, made during Abdülaziz's visit to Bursa, adorns the sarcophagus and shows the history of Osman Gazi. Inside the tomb, there are the sarcophagi of Osman Gazi's son Alaaddin Bey, Orhangazi's wife Aspurça Hatun and twelve of their relatives.
