Hisar Mosque
Overview
Hisar Mosque, built by Yakup Bey in 1592, is one of the largest and most impressive mosques in Izmir. It was designed as a central dome, a prayer area covered with small domes around it, and a domed narthex.
The renewed minaret of the mosque bears the characteristic features of classical period Ottoman mosques. The hand-carved decorations inside, the panels reflecting the intricacies of calligraphy, and the mihrab-pulpit workmanship are among the examples that best represent the elegance of Turkish art. The mosque was restored over time with repairs carried out in 1813, 1881, 1927 and the 1980s.
