Overview

Gerger Castle is located in Adıyaman Oymaklı Village. Its history dates back to the Late Hittite Principalities Period. However, the Old Gerger City BC. The castle is located on a steep cliff and is surrounded by solid walls. On a large rock surface, there is a huge relief of King Samos (140-100 BC) and Greek inscriptions, the father of Commagene King Mithridates Kallinichos and the founder of Somosata (Samsat), the Capital of the Ancient Commagene Kingdom. It is known that in the later periods, the Mamluks ruled for a long time in the Gerger castle and were engaged in reconstruction works. It is possible to see the remains of mosques, shops, water cisterns and similar social structures inside the castle, which was also used in the late period.
